Standard client does not shut down completely

I've got an entire office of users who all occasionally but regularly have a problem with the Notes standard client (9.0.1 FP2 SHF184) not entirely shutting down, even though it appears to.  This is on Windows 7 Pro SP1, both x64 and x86.

Typical scenario is this:  user works all day, no issues.  At the end of the day they shut down Notes by the usual means of clicking on the X.  Everything closes down cleanly and without any error notices.  Next morning when they try to start Notes and it hangs at the splash screen.  If they wait it out for several minutes they get an NSD and an eventual login prompt.

What I've noticed is that when this issue occurs, before even trying to launch Notes, notes2.exe, nlnotes.exe, and ntaskldr.exe are all still running from the previous day, even though there is no visual evidence of them and Notes was closed with apparently no errors the night before.  If I kill the processes beforehand everything launches fine.

Answers to some basic questions:

* Server is Domino 9.0.1 FP2 latest IF
* After closing Notes at the end of the day they lock the workstation, leave and go home.  If they don't lock it it will lock itself after 10-15 min.  Usually they don't log off Windows because, why?  Each user is exclusive to his/her machine.
* PCs do not sleep or hibernate at the moment.  However, they previously were set to sleep and/or hibernate, but it made no difference in frequency of occurrences.
* Machines are a mix of Dell Optiplex systems (380, 390, 3020 mostly) all running Win 7 Pro x64 or x86.
* I've uninstalled and reinstalled Notes.  Set up brand new machines.  Makes no difference.
* Software used: Office 2010, Firefox, Trend Micro OfficeScan.  That is it, really.
* Configured OfficeScan to not scan any Notes directories.  Made no difference.

This has been going on for many months and also affects some 8.5.3 installs as well.  Happens once or twice a week to everyone, including me.  I look for it now on my own machine after closing Notes and will sometimes check 10 minutes later to find notes2.exe, nlnotes.exe, and ntaskldr.exe still running, without any visual indication of such.  I've googled and searched these forums to death, but have not found anything exactly like it.

Ideas?

There are a few open SPRs in this area
Mark,

There are a few open SPRs in this area that look like the are being actively worked. I recommend opening a PMR on this so we can investigate.
